New Grad Interviewing in OB

Hello! I have an interview coming up for the RN position (in L and D) I've been dreaming about since deciding to become a nurse. I have been reviewing all the "normal" stuff like the organization's mission and values, unit information, behaviorial interview questions that could come up, etc.

My reason for wanting to go into L and D is personal, relating to my own L and D experience. How can I talk about this in my interview? I am having such a hard time finding a way to convey my passion for childbirth and the L and D process without bringing up my personal experience. I want to make sure I am staying "interview-ish" while still showing my passion for this specialty. Is this even making sense??

I am very nervous. Can you tell? lol Thank you for any advice tips or suggestions for a nervous new grad!

    The L&D unit I just started on is still hiring and I've noticed some things my unit director has mentioned about the people she has interviewed since.

    She said anyone can learn the skills required for the job, but the main thing is a personality that fits well with the rest of the staff. Just be yourself, be friendly, and smile. I don't think there would be anything wrong with sharing why you love l&d and your own personal experience. She didnt like a girl who shadowed that came on TOO strong, wanting it so badly she tried too hard and it was a turnoff to the staff. There's obvious reasons it's a fun and exciting job, but mention that you're ready to take in all the chaos and hard work with the good.

    I think mentioning your personal experience is OK, as long as you don't over share. Something like, "Having my child changed my life in more ways than I could ever imagine. The nurses I had during my labor and delivery experience showed me.... and I think having been a patient myself has strongly influenced my nursing practice by...." Also, maybe say something about how your passion was reinforced during nursing school?

    I also agree to smile and be yourself. I think being authentic goes a long way!

    For my L&D peer interview, the first question I was asked when walking into the room was "why OB?" maybe you'll get asked that too! Thats a chance to tell your story.

    Thank you for the advice! I will talk about my experience and how it has influenced my nursing philosophy and how I will be able to empathize with my patients. I really appreciate everyone's help. I will let you all know how it goes!!!
