Need scholarships

Published

I will be starting an accelerated BSN program at Johns Hopkins in June and I am scared to death about how much it's going to cost.

I haven't heard back from their financial aid office yet, but I followed all of their advice looking for scholarships and work-repayment programs. I've found some, but I'm just curious if anyone knows any websites, foundations, pharmecutical companies, or hospitals that offer tuition assistance for nursing students?

I'm interested in living in Maryland, Oregon, NYC, Arizona, or Colorado after graduation.

Thanks!!!!

I was accepted to the Johns Hopkins program last year, but the costs were stifling, sorry to say. I think the financial aid package they offered would have meant around 40,000 in loans. Combined with those from my first degree, it just was not worth it. I'm from Colorado though...the program I am in isn't exactly cheap but combined with cheaper living expenses (i.e. mooching off family), it was a much better way for me to go.

The only hospital here that I've looked into for tuition assistance is Exempla, but not sure about the terms and conditions. I'm just getting into looking into those types of things myself.

Hope that helps and doesn't scare you at all...just my experience! Good luck

I'm also starting an acclerated BSN in June. The BSN part is hard to get aid for since I already have a BA and an MS. My plan is to take out loans for whatever I don't get grants/scholarships for, and do the MSN part-time tuition payment from my employer. I live in New York City and all of the nurses I know that have had their masters programs paid for (Montefiore, Columbia-Pres, Pfizer are some of the employers). Once I finish that, I plan to join the national health services corps to pay off the loans from the BSN. The trick with NHSC is placement. My whole reason for going into nursing is to do primary care, I've worked on/off as a consultant at a health center that's in a designated medically underserved that's promised me a position once I'm an FNP. I think there's lots of loan reimbursement if you're willing to do primary care, I'm not sure about other specialties.

I'm starting the same program in June at Hopkins and I'm a little nervous about the costs too... And like you, I've run into a lot of dead-ends when searching for scholarships, especially for post-bacc students. Several scholarships also required you to be "enrolled," not just accepted to the program. So I've decided to search hard again once I'm officially enrolled. Also, there are tons of hospitals and even state governments who are offering tuition reimbursement or forgiveness once you've finished your education. Many areas need nurses badly, and will offer these benefits to attract you. If you can't pay it, or don't want to, someone else can pay it for you.

I'm trying not to worry about it... I think your education is the best investment you can make! Plus, with the accelerated program, we'll be earning money while other students are paying a 2nd year of tuition.

Thanks for that reminder! Just got my daughter's "aid package" for her accelerated program, and, other than $1,500 in work study, all they had to offer were loans :-( As our family has 2 in college for next year, and me finishing up this year, we'll all be working very hard to pay off loans over the next decade! But it will be worth it!
