hey ppl...im new to the forum and this seems like an awesome place to get some answers from what i've read!
i'm currently a second-year student at CCBC Essex...i'm a biology major whos planing to transfer to either UMBC or Notre Dame in Fall 2006. The intial idea was pre-med....and when i visited these colleges they told me becos i shifted from business to pre med it would take me three years to complete requirements. The doctor thing is more my parents idea and I don't think its meant for me because I like more human interaction.
I was looking into the field of nurse practitioner and am going to be doing some volunteer work to find out what its like. Does anyone here know if having a bachelors in biology is gonna be any help? And i defenitely know I will be going for my BSN somehow...but I dont know if UMBC offers nursing. Is it possible to major in anything else if I plan to go down the road to become a nurse practitioner?
Thanks guys!

Hello,
I attended UMBC and now I am at UMB, SON. UMBC does NOT offer a nursing program. I doubt a bio degree will hurt you but I do not think it would help that much either. Unless you actually want a degree in biology, I would skip it and go for the BSN if you know you want to be a nurse. I may be wrong, but I think you have to be an RN to enter a nurse practitioner (Master's degree) program; so, you are going to end up getting that BSN or similar education either way. If you decided to just get a bio degree, it may just take a couple years longer.

hey!
thanx a lot for the reply....i was wondering...wat is tht two-year thing UMBC has for people who plan to do nursing? http://www.umbc.edu/UnderGrad/Catalog/preprofessional_health.pdf
that's the link and it says pre-nursing on page 153. I'm guessing its different from BSN..i'm really confused.
In any case...I'm really on my own with this because my parents have decided not to support me. I was wondering if you could give me an estimate on the cost for attending and other expenses.
Thanks so much!
Well, UMBC's program is a pre-nursing program and you can enter into UMB's BSN. I would contact a UMBC advisor about details tho. UMBC is about 17,000/year (according to them but that seems really low to me) and UMB is about 30,000/year (which seems a little high but more accurate than UMBC). Honestly, if money is an issue, I would go to CC for pre-nursing and save some money and then go to complete the BSN.
