So I've been really studying the mental heath section and I feel comfortable with a lot of the disorders and most of the material. So I took a practice quiz (from the mystudygroup forms) and I'm having a really hard time with the nursing interventions. Mostly the questions I had trouble with were the ones where you have to say something to the patient. I have no idea how to figure these out!! Any suggestions as to how to approach these questions? I've never had a problem with them before on any of the other exams. I'm just not even sure where to "study" this information??

I'd suggest reading about therapeutic communication - it is at the beginning of my Fundamentals book. Basically, do not judge, do not blame anyone, do not say that pt is not right (even if he tells you he can see werewolves in a closet) do not ask questions that could be answered with "yes" or "no", try to ask open-ended questions. Try to "restate" whatever the pt just said. for example - "I haven't slept at all during pas couple of nights!" - "You're having difficulty sleeping?"; "I don't want you to touch me, I can take care of myself!" "It sounds like you want to take care of yourself. Let's work together so you can do things for yourself"; "I won't give you my blood, you are all vampires, get out of here!""it must be frightful to think others want to hurt you" (examples from my Sander's NCLEX-RN review book, was very helpful for me)
Also, if it is an option, try to figure out pt coping mechanism that helped in the past.
That's all I can think about for now :)
