Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi there-

I got my BS degree from Cal Poly SLO in 2008 GPA 2.99

I have been applying to all community colleges in CA for over 2 years now and havent hit a single lottery. I am on the waitlist for a school in santa cruz but still a year and a half away. Are there programs in other states which are easy to get into to? Can I apply for another Bachelors degree and not have to do so much work? I was under the assumption I just needed an associates degree since I already had a bachelors. PLEASE HELP!!! Its gotten to the point where I am researching other careers. I am a guy and would love to be a male nurse. I absolutely think helping people in such an environment is so rewarding and helpful. I just need to move forward in this!! Thanks

Try applying to an Accelerated-BSN program (often called "second degree nursing").

However, many require a minimum of 3.0 undergrad GPA. I am not sure how your 2.99 would fit into this.

DARN!! I know so on the cusp. What to dooooooooooo?

Hopefully someone with experience regarding this matter can help you out.

For now, I would just call/e-mail the programs that you're interested in.

Accelerated BSN, definitely - they're tailored for people who have a degree already, and are normally 1 to 2 years long. Community colleges are MUCH more competitive, because anyone can apply. For ABSN schools, though, only people who already have a bachelor's degree and want to switch careers to nursing can apply, so the pool is much smaller. Generally it's much more expensive, though. Some schools in Southern CA to check out are Mount St. Mary's, Cal State Northridge, and Azusa Pacific.

Also, there are entry-level MSN programs you could look into if you're interested in going that route.

Yes, I agree. Do an Accelerated BSN. A lot of the time there is a GPA cummulative cut off, but a lot of school s do a point system for entry. Eventhough your GPA might be borderline, if you do well in all your prereq's for nursing you can bring you GPA up and they usually look for grade B or higher in those classes. They also take in account what you orginal degree is in. For example, they might show more flexibility if your degree is in a more challenging subject. Also, you could look into the community college nusing program (RN's), but they are more competitive and are also based on the point system in the California. Personally, I've heard that the hospitals are hiring more BSN's rather than RN's, but it might be different there in N Cali. I know there are a lot of options.

Good luck, hope this helped a bit. I know I have pretty much researched everything!

Take a class at a community college and pump tat GPA over 3.00! Also, It's my understanding that CSU's and UC's will not grant a second 4 year degree, even an accelerated one. Do you know something about this?

Definitely do something to get your GPA at least to 3.0

There are programs in which you can get a second bachelors degree. Most of the ABSN programs are set up specifically for that purpose. It won't take four years to get it, but it is definitely a four-year degree. One program in particular, the Entry Level Masters program at CSULB awards a BSN halfway through the program before you take the NCLEX then awards an MSN and NP (or CNS depending on what you want) upon completion. That program, though, requires that you have at least a 3.0 GPA in your first bachelor's degree program. It's doable, but they are ALL competitive. You really do have to do the work before you can expect to get into a program around here these days...and even when you do you have to cross your fingers and toes and hope you have at least a little luck :lol2: Best of luck to ya!!!
