hi i need help with the following calculation even with the answer i am confused how to set it help can you please help thanks
the physician orders aqueous penicillin 500,000 units in 50 ml d5w intravenously q8hrs. a multidose vial of aqueous penicillin contains 1million units/4ml. the microdrip set delivers 60drops/ml. to infuse the penicillian over 30minutes the rate of administration should be which amount?
correct answer is 104gtts/min
the formula is number of ml x drop factor number of min =drops/min60gtts= 1ml 1,000,000 units/4ml 500,000 units /2ml (50ml + 2ml)
even with the answer i am not sure how then got 2ml and how they set up the problem can someone help me out :imbar thanks

To find how many mL of aqueous penicillin you need, set up a ratio:
4 mL....................x
____ .........=........_____
1,000,000............ 500,000
(ignore the periods - they're necessary for spacing)
Cross multiply the 500,000 and 4, then divide by the 1,000,000 to get x.
500,000 x 4 = 2,000,000/1,000,000 = 2
Then you add the 2 mL to the 50 mL of D5W which gives you 52 mL that needs to be run in over 8 hours. Are you ok on converting to the drip part?
