NCLEX question

Hi all,

I need help with a question on my study guide:

As a nurse what meds should be given first? Antifungals, Antibacterial, Antihistamine, Antivirals and why?

Featured Replies

You want to give antihistamine first. Why? Histamine is released in an allergic reaction. It causes inflammatory responses and contraction of the smooth muscle of the airway which is life threatening. Antihistamine prevents the histamine from attaching to their receptor sites.

If you really do not know the answer, you'll notice that the other options are all anti-infectives and only antihistamine is different. In addition, think of ABC as priority.

I was thinking it was antihistimine because it is different from the rest but then I thought maybe an antibiotic first so that way if you get an allergic reaction from the pt. you will know what caused it.
