Hello,
I live in California, and am a current CNA. I am expecting to get into the LVN program in May and finish in 1 1/2 years from now. When completed my husband and I wish to relocate and are looking at NC. We have four children. Can anyone shed some light on living in NC, good areas with hospitals to work and schools? When we get settled I will also need to apply to an RN program. Right now we are looking at Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham as possibilities. Any suggestions?:redpinkhe

I live in Chapel Hill (near Raleigh/Durham). It's a great place to live. I did 2 travel nurse assignments in Charlotte. Loved it there too. Chapel Hill is home to UNC. Good college with great nursing program. Wish you well in your schooling and your move.
Thank You for your input. What is Chapel Hill like?
I class Chapel Hill as a small town college town. The population is dependent on the college sessions. It's a quaint little town with the university sitting in the middle of it. They love their sports teams and cater to the games. Not as bad as Columbus, Ohio, where they pretty much close down the town for their sports, but they are pretty active. There is a town to the west called Carrboro. It's a great little town. Close to everything, but out of the hubub of the university. Great shopping, a farmer's market, and Weaver Street Market where you can find lots of ecclectic items. Lots of great restaurants.
You're close enough to Raleigh/Durham to enjoy the benefits of the cities. (Performing arts, bigger malls, airport, etc.) It's about a 40-45 minute drive to the airport. Sports complexes for the Durham Bulls and the Hurricanes hockey team. I know I've probably left a lot out. You could check out their websites for more information.
Hope this helps. :loveya:

I am leaning on the same exact plan. I am going to be finishing up my LVN shortly and am wanting to go back to North Carolina which is where I grew. I am running into the same questions. I know there are such things as compact states where your license is good in those few states but Cali is not one of them....have you researched any on what we would have to do in order to work as licensed nurses in North Carolina....where are you doing your nursing in California?

Just a word of warning. The pay down here in the south is much much less than what you are making in California. The cost of living is a little less but not enough to make up for the pay cut.

I'm relocating to NC in December upon graduation and it completely freaks me out that...
1.) there are even less new grad jobs available in NC and SC than in MI (where I currently reside)
2.) the pay difference is staggering; at the hospital I'm currently employed with as a nurse tech, new grads start at 26 or 30 (if you opt out of the insurance).
I realize the cost of living is different, but with the massive school loans I will owe come December, I can't even begin to express my frustration.
