Jan 29, 201610 yr You won't be fired or lose your license. Just figure out what you could have done differently and present that when/if asked about it later.
Jan 29, 201610 yr I don't suggest catching pts who are falling, you could injure yourself also. If in a position to help lower them to the floor, then assist them, but catching a pt is no good. You also need to relax, unless you shoved the pt out of bed, you aren't going to lose your license or get fired. However, make sure side rails are up next time.
Jan 30, 201610 yr Lol, so you were turning your pt and basically they rolled off the bed?Side rails are your friends
Jan 30, 201610 yr My facility will "write up" a nurse when their patient falls. Did you have the side rails up? Was it just you, or did you have another person helping? Did you fill out an incident report, and what did your supervisor say?I highly doubt you would be fired, and you definitely would not lose your license over this. It's important to reflect on what went wrong and what you could have done to prevent the fall from happening though.
Jan 30, 201610 yr Ouch! He fell over the side rails? Was he injured? I imagine the bed was up high to aid you in repositioning him, so to fall over the side rails and having the bed high, that could be quite a fall. He must have been strong to manage to flip himself like that. Was he confused?

Jan 30, 201610 yr Hey don't beat yourself up. These things happen. I had something similar happen to me and the fall risk team came and talked to me about prevention but I did not get written up even.
Jan 30, 201610 yr So confused, how is this possible? I'm assuming that since the OP caught the pt and lowered him that he must have been turning the pt toward him? Idk. Either way freak things happen we just need to figure out how to prevent them next time
Jan 30, 201610 yr So confused, how is this possible? Yeah, I'm interested to know more details. I've never seen a patient manage to do this with someone in the room (over the side rails). This patient needs two staff when positioning, if he can flip over the rails that fast (has to be strong to get over the rails). I want to know if he was confused, combative, why only one staff member was assisting, ect... Falling over the bed rails with staff in the room would be a big investigation in my facility. We take falls extremely seriously. Also interested what the fall root cause analysis result was. It's so important to debrief after any fall and see what the potential causes/contributing factors were, then how to improve practice and prevent in the future.
