Hi! I currently live in FL, I am in nursing school & planning to graduate May 08. Once I graduate I'll be joining my Hubby in Maryland. I will probably work in FL for a couple months and then apply for licensure by endorsement.
I just wanted to know about the job market in the Fort Meade area and who is the top employer in the area as far as hospitals, organizations, etc? What's the pay like, etc? Also, I have been reading a lot of post regarding "agency nursing." What is this? And what benefits does it offer over working for a hospital?
Thanks for your help!

Howard County General Hospital is in Columbia, which is just north of Ft. Meade. It's associated with Johns Hopkins There is also Laurel Regional, but they are up for sale with some associated nursing homes, that is supposed to be a package deal, so I haven't heard how that is coming along & whether the hospital will close or not. It employs mainly agency nurses too, which says a lot for staffing issues. Good luck with your future move!:)

There's a hospital in Glen Burnie... used to be called North Arundel, but now it's Baltimore Washington ? Hospital. If you do a search for North Arundel, you'll be redirected to it. It's a growing hospital. If you don't mind driving 20 minutes or so, there's a plethora of hospitals in Baltimore.
I hear their ED is chaotic. That's all I know.
Good luck with your relocation. I've lived here for 6 years & really
like the area.
Thanks so much! Keep it coming!

If your goal is to live in maryland, why not get initial licensure in maryland and start a new grad internship in your field of choice locally? Baltimore City has many medical centers that hire and train new grads (Univ of maryland and Johns Hopkins for example). And due to the shortage in the DC/Baltimore area you may get some relocation assistance from these types of places. I would discourage "working a couple of months" then trying to get a job in a new state, alot of employers in this area will find that sketchy, regardless of the reason.
As for agency nursing- Look at them as independant contractors. They get paid more per hour, but do not necessarily have any benefits(health insurance, paid time off, etc.) as they are not directly employed by the hospital. Most respectable agencies do not employ new grads, as they should require a year of experience in your field of nursing.
hope this helps and good luck!
