Midline cap ripped off

Updated:   Published

I had a patient yesterday who was trashing in bed. He ended up yanking out the cap of his midline. I tried putting an IVs cap on it, it didn't work. The educator said he would have to be tested for a possible PE because the cap had broken off. What would you have done in this situation?

Any idea how long the cap was off before the line was removed? There would have to be quite a lot of air intake for a PE to occur. I think I just would have removed the line and covered with a dressing.
