I have all the info you could possibly need about the Betty Ann Stedman Psych Nurse Internship Program for BSN grads. I used to be one!! The work environment is like no other. You will be at a nationally ranked hospital. Terms begin in Jan and June, and if you are chosen, you will receive a 6 month paid internship. You are not considered staff, so you will be able to attend many Continuing Education courses, Baylor Grand Rounds. . . :typing

I went to 2 out-of-town / overnight conferences. You are paired with a Preceptor and a Clinical Education Specialist. You can get her name and number off the website. www.Menninger.edu Then, go to "careers" and you click on "Nurse Internship Program." She shares articles that help you make the transition from the beginning to socializing with the patients, and helping the patient become an active participant in setting and measuring goals for treatment.

:redbeathe My favorite part is when you get to experience each and every single unit for about a week each, towards the end of the Internship. It helps you to decide which one you would like to work on. As far as benefits, mine started after 90 days. They are so wonderful for me! I believe now they start on the first day.

:caduceus:Patient population varies on each unit, and you can read more about under "Treatment Programs" on the website. The atmosphere is super-comfortable, but it's always moving forward. Things get done around here!! One thing you may like to know, is that we do not wear scrubs to work. We dress business-casual. That is to not differentiate so much between the patients and the staff. And most of the doctors communicate with you so well and really want to know your opinion.

Lastly, it is great for career-progression!! They also have a Transitional Nursing Program for nurses from other fields. They WANT you to get your MSN. They WANT you to join the ANA and APNA (and will even pay for it during your internship!!) We are Texas Nurse Friendly, which is symbiotic of being Magnet Status. Well, as you can tell, I can go on and on. . . :heartbeat

Thanks so much. I know the internship is an excellent opportunity. My concern is whether I can pay my bills and have health insurance right away. I am a diabetic and have the texas pool insurance which is outrageous! I own a home and I am a single mother to a teenager so I have to support myself. Do you know what the intership pays, ball park figure? The website states that benefits start at 90 days. Are the hours 8 to 5 or is there shift work at nights which I do prefer.

I thank you for the amount of information you have given me. I plan to apply to most of the hospitals in January. I am leaning towards the UT system because of retirement and benefits. Was thinking also about making rounds at Menninger as a per diem once I get some experience maybe at Harris County Psych Hospital. I don't know, everything is up in the air! Any further insight would be appreciated ! Thanks

I am currently trying to find out the monthly stipend for the BSN internship at Menninger as well. I am loving it there as a student during clinicals, and would love to work there. However, like the above poster, I have 2 little kiddos and my hubby and I are already struggling. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I'm only a first year nursing student, but I am really interested in psych nursing and hope to one day apply to the internship at the Menninger clinic. My question is this: Does Menninger expect you to be proficient at IV starts when they hire you? In my program (4 years), we don't learn IV starts (something about a liability issue), so I'm wondering if I should take a phlebotomy class to become proficient, unless they train you at Menninger. Let me know!

No IV starts are really done, these are not acute psych patients requiring IVs and such. What program are you in? FYI, they only higher Bachelor and higher degrees.

Thanks for the reply! I'm currently a freshman at the University of Michigan in their 4 year BSN program so I should have the credentials I need to get a good psych job and hopefully all the skills I need as well. Psych is definitely my passion, so hopefully I will be able to land an amazing internship like that at Menninger.
