Nurses in my Family, but None Are Helping Me
Hi Ruby, I appreciate your comment. Having said that, I do believe you misunderstood my thread. My situation involves my concern over the nurses in my family not offering advice and assistance in regards to learning more about the nursing profession. It does not involve me soliciting family, especially my mother, for money. I do not live with my mother, and have an apartment with my fiance. I have been blessed to be fortunate enough to have a healthy savings account (that I have contributed to since the age of 17, when I got my first job). I pay all of my bills on time, with my own money. My mother would rather me work full-time, rather than go to school full-time, because she fears that I will one day not be able to pay my bills. I have to reassure her that school is an investment, and that I will reap the rewards soon. Perhaps I should have explained that more clearly - no one in my life financially supports me. The last time anyone supported me financially, I was 16 and in high school. Either way, this post was to explain a very sensative topic, not to pout about how no one loves me or pays my bills. I'm afraid that my writing that one sentence about my mother put a bad taste in your mouth, but that is certainly not the kinda girl I am. Thank you for taking time to respond, however I feel you are way off on my situation...but I am being respectful, as I would never disrespect anyone, in person, or behind a computer screen. There will always be people in this world who have different view points than myself, and that take my kindness for weakness. I may be sensative, but I am certainly not weak. Everything I have, I've earned. But I still thank the kind people who offered positive responses, and who truly understand where I am coming from. What doesn't kill me makes me stronger - and I'm still alive. Praise Jesus, for he will not forsake me, even when others do!! **Edited to Add: after having such a great talk with some family members, and some ammmmaaazzzing friends, I am so over being depressed over this. I've gotten soooo much positive comments from you fabulous nurses, that I am confident I can do this on my own. **holding my head up high, and ignoring the nay sayers, and rude people**

Nurses in my Family, but None Are Helping Me
Awesome responses! I want to respond to each and every one of you, but I just got out of CNA class and am a bit tired. One thing about me: I have always been independent and a loner - if I need something done, i'd do it myself. I don't ask people for money because I've learned to save up for emergencies. Even when I was in college I barely ever did the study group thing because it didn't work for me. Also, out of all the people in my immediate family, I have the most drive, determination, etc, and never had a problem (fyi, I am the only one who graduated from HS and went to college. - besides the few nurses in my family) I understand that since I've done most things for myself, people assume that I've "got it in the bag". Well, sometimes I am weak and need someone to lean on. I am honestly tired of having to rely on myself, meanwhile everyone else in my family gets a handout everytime something goes wrong. So yeah, when I request help, its truly a rare occassion. I know I can do my own research, I know I am an adult and can do for myself - but I am still human with questions. Everyone needs help. Everyone. And another note I forgot to mention, my mother is more concerned about me being able to pay my bills, than on my passion to go back to school. So my support system is a little screwed up....but that's another story for another day. Don't get me wrong, she is happy that I want to become a nurse, but if I don't bring up the convo she won't either. Thank you to everyone. I will do what I have to do, and if I have any questions (after doing my own research first, of course), I know that I can come here for excellent advice. You all are such help I and promise to help anyone who needs my help when I become a nurse. Paying it forward, regardless if no one in my family has paid it forward with me.

Nurses in my Family, but None Are Helping Me
Thank you everyone for your responses. I am aware that I must do this all on my own, and that this is indeed my life. However, just like allnurses.com has become an online "family" and resource center, I assumed that my own family would be the same for me. Naturally, I can ask other students, and call up the school and gain insight - but, I didn't think asking someone in my family, who has been there and done that, would lead to such a dead end. Also, Praiser, you made a good point - I will think about that. :-) Thanks - I'll put on my big girl panties, and deal with it.

Nurses in my Family, but None Are Helping Me
Calling all you nurturing, sensitive, caring, and extremely empathetic nurses out there - I need some advice!! I have some nurses in my family, and also one who is currently in LPN school. I thought since I am interested in becoming a nurse, that I can go to them for advice, questions that I have, and even buy some used books/equipment off of them. So I thought. Every time I ask questions, they give me short answers, leaving me to just do the research on my own anyway. In addition, when I ask for advice, they give me generic "you'll do great!", or "good luck in school!" responses - nothing too detailed or indepth, which makes my asking the question a total waste of time. Also, I've asked my mother-in-law for help on obtaining volunteer positions, and used books (I offered to buy them - not get them for free). Both times, I got a nice response "Sure, I'll help". Nothing came of it. I asked a few times later, and still nothing...eventually I just forgot about it, and said they do not want to help. I am a totally different type of person. I love helping others, and go out of my way to do research for others. Why am I not getting this in return? Should I feel angry about this, or should I just ignore it? I know I am very sensitive, but I am honestly getting more advice and assistance from you wonderful nurses than I am my own family. That kind of makes me question some things. Lastly, does anyone think they are not assisting me, because they had to do things on their own? Even so, what happened to the term "pay it forward"? It's not like I'm going to steal their jobs away - one of them is in california, and the other has been a nurse for over 21 years - there is no way that I could even compete with them. I was told to ask for help whenever you need it. But what should I do, when no one helps?? For the past few days I have been feeling lost and completely alone - and it's not because I don't ask for help - it's because when I do ask for help, no one seems to give 2 cents about me. I feel like saying "screw you - and thanks for nothing!" - but I know that is not going to help. :-(

"The Mean Girl"
I'd report her - point blank. Both of my grandparents passed away in hospital settings, and there were numerous times when I saw rude nurses or assistants caring for them. So that bothers me to see CNA's or anyone not doing there job properly. Like I said, report her.

Are all LTC jobs like this?
I so feel for you! You are a rare person, like myself, who is extremely sensitive. People like us are few and far between, so you may notice that many people can not relate to you. I've been there, and even still have my days. I am in CNA school (just started), and understand that I will more than likely be tested by rude individuals who have no business in healthcare. Ive even encountered selfish people like that at previous administrative jobs. And girl, just because people are over the age of 18 doesn't mean they haven't mentally graduated from high school - they still do the gossiping and hanging out in cliq's...it is what it is. Anyway, I digress. Before you consider meds, have you spoken to the person in HR about switching your schedule to times when those immature little girls aren't working? Consider it - I would rather you have a totally different schedule, than to put some meds in your body that you more than likely don't even need. This seems to be an environmental problem, rather than a brain/chemical issue...so change your environment. Also, can you afford to move out of your house into your own apartment? You mentioned your mom verbally abuses you.... If your income is low, consider section 8 or some sort of public assistance for a few months to get on your feet - it can assist with rent, food stamps, medical bills, etc. After you are on your feet, then you can get off of public assistance. I know you love your mommy, but look how this is killing you inside. Then, when you get to work, you have to deal with someone else's crap. I suggest you move, and get a new schedule....or, while still working at this job, apply at other facilities....then, once you get hired, leave. There are other options....if these don't work, then you can consider other alternatives. Trust me, I understand you. PM me or shoot me an email if you need to chat or vent. D

Lincoln Tech's FIRST LPN Class - Should I Attend??
Thank you Katnip and MollyPita, I don't think it was meant for me to meet with the Admissions Counselor, because as I was walking to the train station (nope, don't have a car yet), it began raining really hard and the wind was blowing my umbrella around. As I got to the station my umbrella flipped upside down, and it metal rods broke! I got soaked and had to cancel my appointment - no way was I going to sit on an air conditioned train WET and cold, then have to walk to the office without an umbrella. SO - I figure that was a sign? Maybe I am better off waiting until December to take my TEAS and begin school, God willing, in Feb 2010. Oh well

Lincoln Tech's FIRST LPN Class - Should I Attend??
Please feel free to move this, should this not be in the correct forum. I just recently, as of 20 minutes ago, found out that Lincoln Tech in my area will be offering a LPN program; it's Full-Time, Monday-Friday from 8AM-4PM (not sure when clinicals are, but shall ask tomorrow) - beginning AUGUST 2009!! Yes, in 2 months!!. However, it's the FIRST class - ever at this location, and is only accepting 30 people - and these 30 people MUST all pass with 100% passing rate in order for this LPN program to even exist next year. I am going tomorrow to meet with an Admissions Counselor to see if I should even pursue this venture. He mentioned that they are approved by the BON, but it's conditional based on how well everyone does. I already have my hopes on entering into another LPN program come Feb 2010 - but if I can start in 2 months, then I would certainly want the opportunity! I would have to take the NET test, even though my other program requires the TEAS. Being that this is soooo last minute (it's only June 17!!), I would most likely have to scramble and shuffle and get all stressed out in order to be in this program. Not to mention the cost - I am assuming it would be around the $30,000 +??? It is Lincoln Tech after all - they are known for being $$$$$$$$$. In addition, I am scared that who ever they hire to teach the course won't have a clue as to how to educate and prepare us - I really am nervous about that. OH....and should I be worried that this is the FIRST class? Would I be better off going to an established school with a 95% passing rate, or give this newbie school a shot? I wouldn't want to make a huge mistake.... ADVICE please?!! I'm biting my nails, and waiting for my meeting/interview tomorrow!! Wait...I don't even know if I will pass the NET....!! Thank You!! D

CNA to LPN to BSN to MSN , Whew!
Update: I am starting a part-time job on Monday (non-medical related), which is extremely flexible. I'm going to get CPR certified soon, and also volunteer at my local hospital. THE CNA route would have cost me $1400! I called literally ever nursing home near me, and non of them offer free training. However, there were 2 that DID offer training, and I applied to one - never heard back from them. And the second would have been 1.5 hours from my home, and I could not find a way to get there by 8AM each day. So...I am waiting for my LPN program to start in Feb 2010. Applying to 2 schools - just in case!!

Wondering if 50 is too old to go to RN school
My mother-in-law just turned 51 in January, and also started an LPN program in San Diego during the same month! It can be accomplished!!

Lost my job....
Rather than give up so quickly, why don't you call your job and speak openly and honestly to the boss/supervisor. Explain to them that you are sorry for how you ended things. This job is important, as they will be used as references when you seek another position, even outside of the healthcare field. Also, you should consider going to school for an LPN or RN degree/diploma - it opens your world to various positions and atmospheres. Let me tell you something - I am a highly sensative person; to the point of it being a downfall in my life. I understand how it feels to want something so bad, that I self-sabotage my role (being late, not calling when I should, quiting just because I feel like I want too, etc) or job. UNTIL, I learned that people love to see other people fail. They love when we aren't at our best, because if we were doing well, then they would have something to complain about in there life. So, I stepped my game up. I became a more responsible person - for myself, and because my word is my bond. All we have is our reputation, and I believe that. If you let this one bad experience change your outlook, then you will let another bad experience change another outlook. You will never be happy with anything that you do, and you will find fault - even when nothing is wrong. So - before huffing and puffing, and thinking that you no longer want to be a CNA, consider this: There are thousands of people who would love to become a CNA right now, but can not afford to take the class. There are plenty of people who don't have the time, because they have to work multiple jobs to feed there families. The list goes on. You are a CNA now - while others are actively trying to become one. The economy is tough girl!! Put on your big girl panties, and tell the world that you are strong and regardless if you made a mistake, you will do your best to make amends and become a better person. Sorry to have written such a long reply, but you sound like me when I was a youngin', and I wish I had someone to straighten me out back then. You are more blessed than you realize - just take a look around you.

Lost my job....
Hi, I am sorry that you lost your job, especially in this economy. Was there a way for you to call your boss on your way/or while at the family location? Waiting until you return was kind of pushing it. Don't get me wrong, my heart goes out to you. What I am trying to say, is while driving, or on the bus or train, you could have left a voicemail or somehow had a message relayed that you were heading to a family emergency. They probably assumed you didnt care - in my opinion. But, I pray you find another job, and fast!!

CNA to LPN to BSN to MSN , Whew!
Thank you for all of these great ideas/options. The local community colleges are all filled up for this year and are currently accepting people for September 2010. Plus they all require that I have completed a list of pre-requisites, which I have not done. I will also be applying to a CNA training program this week.

CNA to LPN to BSN to MSN , Whew!
Thanks for your reply. To clarify, I left the position due to poor support from the company overall, and various other reasons. I did not leave to focus on school. After coming home depressed on numerous occassions and finding myself crying in the bathroom during lunch breaks, I knew that it was not the place for me. I have been working since I was 17 (almost 27), even while attending college fulltime a few years ago. But I dropped out of school and started working fulltime instead. I've always regretted not getting my degree. But I understand what you mean about leaving a job. However people should be able to leave a job based upon other factors than passing/failing courses. Life is complicated indeed. :-)

LPN Programs in Philadelphia or Delco?
I am FULL of questions this week!! I live in Delco, not too far from Philly. I can not enter DCCC or CCP's Nursing program due to my lack of pre-req's, AND the exisiting wait list; I would need to wait until FALL 2010 SOOOO....the only options that I have right now (that I can think of), is applying for an LPN program in the area. However, I am worried that those credits will not transfer over once I go back to school for my BSN (want to do the LPN to BSN, or LPN to ADN/ASN to BSN - which ever is cheaper, and quicker). But first things first. What LPN program is Good, does not require any pre-req's, and would also allow me to obtain financial aid?? Full-time/Part-time, does not matter right now, because I will find a way to work that out. If nothing else, I will become a CNA, and begin working while I wait things out....but I really want to start LPN school ASAP. I need to get started quickly, but keep being sent back to the drawing board. Please help me out??
