What type of information should be gathered about a resident during the observation period?

There is no shortcut to this answer. The best way is to actually get an overview of what the MDS is asking for in Sections BCDEFGHIJKLMNOP. Only then will you get an idea on what to look for.

Not only on new admits, most sections in the MDS have a 7-day observation period and some have a 14-day. The observation period ends on the ARD. Hence, if the ARD is June 15, a 7-day observation begins on June 9 and ends June 15, and a 14-day observation begins on June 2 ending on June 15. Any event occurring before the begin dates and after June 15 is not included in the MDS.
