Management MSN

Sadly, the degree does not always provide a leg up on the competition or the job you may hope to hold. In civilian hospitals it is good to have and you should very much feel proud of your accomplishment, but on the flip side you may get resentment from those you work with. as you may know many hospitals promote based on seniority or by who knows who and not who is the most qualified. I have worked several places where the managers had only a BSN or less while a few they supervised held far more education.

On the military side it really does go by seniority. You may enter the service with credit for experience and education. However, you need time in to actually know what the heck is going on. You can have managers with little real

experience and only a BSN and since they are more senior than you that is how it goes, but as you stay in you can utilize your education and make for easier transitions down the road - cause sooner or later they have to earn a graduate degree to move up in their career.

All of the civilians places I worked went by the "it's who you know" system. All nurses in management had been there for life and one had a father who donated a bazillion $$ so she could be the unit manager. Good luck displacing the "good ole girl" system with a degree.

Your "the world sucks" mentality is of no use to me.

Mainly because it is to easy to become and stay that way. I dont want to get into that rut. My family deserves better.

not to split hairs, but a simple clarification; on the military side it typically goes by seniority.

enlisted job always go by date of rank. officer jobs usually do, but can go by best fit, or who needs what. if a senior capt is looking at maj boards, but hasn’t held the correct leadership position – we will try to make that happen so we can set that capt up for success. now, if he doesn’t want that route, so be it – we’ll leave him out of the job and give it to someone who wants the experience.

I am very interested in the military and the experience I could gain by going that route.

I've also been looking into the Public Health Service Corp. Going in with an MSN in management would I still go straight to a clinical bedside role as a nurse? I'm saying this as lately I've been looking into more non clinical roles as a nurse. Are those options available in the military at first? Thanks.

Yes, you would get the opportunity to work as a bedside nurse first. We don't hire managers from the outside, we grow them and promote from within.
