magnet status

I'm still in my pre's and have at least a year waitlist until ASN school so I have a few years to go..........but I'm discouraged because the hospital I want to work at just began only hiring BSN's. They want magnet status.

I plan to continue my education, but would love to work there while working on my BSN too.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Or what should I do? Forget about working there? Or is there a "loophole" or something? I guess my last bit of hope is that "things" will be different when I graduate. :zzzzz

You might be able to increase your employment chances by working at that hospital as a nursing assistant or something while you are in school. If they know you and like you, they may hire you in spite of not having a BSN. Magnet hospitals are allowed to hire non-BSN's: they just need to show that they encourage higher education for nurses.

ChunLiomyRn2b, I know exactly what hospital you are talking about, as I have a relative in HR for the whole organization and i work at that hospital too! :-) I wouldn't give up hope at all!! They are on an ASN hiring freeze in order to gain their magnet status because the hospital HAS to have a certain % of BSN nurses in order to gain that status. THe status will make them available for more grants for research and for continuing education (which could work in your advantage if you're planning on continuing your education). However once they gain their status (hopefully soon and I'm sure before you graduate) They will be able to hire more ASN nurses. I wouldn't give up hope!

AN guide~ lol Im a tech there already, so yea I'm definitely giving 120% at all times in the hopes of just that.

Destinyx13~:yeah:How are things? What you said does give me LOTS of hope!!! My NOM told me that things will be totally different when I graduate, so let's keep our fingers crossed. I was just tossing around the idea of going straight to UCF for my BSN and skipping the ASN. But I would be a tech the WHOLE time if I did that! So ADN it is. It's sick how much I love being a part of that hospital, though. I'm sure you know what I mean.:D
