LPN Needs advice!!!

I work LTC and I love it. I love my residents and enjoy learning from them. Down side is getting attached. It's hard to lose someone.

Are you full time or PRN? What is your typical day like?

Full time. I work nights, which some people might think is slow, but it's NOT! Haha. I spend most of my time doing treatments, charting of course, and then I make sure I have time for whatever random thing decides to occur. LTC is nothing like med surg, it's hectic in its own way, but as you get to know the patients it becomes second nature.

How many hours do the PRN nurses get in your facility. I'm kind of concerned of not getting enough hours? But then again I hear that in some places PRN work almost as much as full time? Thank you for your input.

I can't speak for all, but PRN nurses get plenty of time where I am! Not sure exactly on how many hours, but we're always in need.

working PRN or as it's called per diem, you will probably make more money than a full timer but not always get the hours you want. You are "as needed". You will float which means works anywhere in the building and not have a set place to call 'home'. That can be good and bad. You probably won't get embroiled in the day to day back-stabbing among nurses that can happen in some places because you never stay in one place long enough. You will have to be on your toes all the time because you never get to really know all the meds and routines, so every day is new, which can be good too. It's all in the way you look at it.
