LPN then ABSN

Published

I recently found an accelerated bsn that accepts LPN's as long as they have the pre reqs completed along with 65 credit hours.

OR

they accept motivated students with 90 credits and students with BS in other fields.

I have the opportunity to attend LPN school this fall for 10months, paid by a pell grant.

OR

I could finish up the rest of the 90 credits..i have 47...and apply for the Jan 2013 class for the ABSN....this is the earliest I could get in because they only start the ABSN every Jan...and I have to have the 90 credits finished by this may to get into the Jan 2012 class.

The ABSN is 12 mths in length monday thru friday 8-5pm all year long.

do you think it would be smarter to get my LPN and then try the ABSN? I would graduate from the LPN summer 2012 and then go into the ABSN Jan 2013. again...no cost for me to do the LPN program...but it will be out of pocket to do the ABSN.

I have previous healthcare experience as a CNA, but I was thinking being an LPN might give me an edge going through the clinical portion of the ABSN. The LPN program Im looking at has clinicals 2x a week Jan-June.

so should I go the LPN route FIRST or just finish my 90 credits?

either way im applying for the Jan 2013 class of the ABSN.

THANKS!

so either way you would hopefully be starting the BSN program in 2013?

Is this the only program you can apply to, and what are your chances of getting in?

When I applied to nursing schools it was soooo competive and nothing was for sure, I think if this school was your only option then I would go for the LPN so you could at least get some nursing experience

Yep either way I would start Jan 2013 for the ABSN.

This is the only ABSN program I can apply for but not the only nursing program. I think my chances are pretty good.

hello :)

just curious,

what is the name of the school offering this program? i am an lpn and really want to get my bsn quick

does anyone else think getting my lpn would help?

There are some other things I think are worth mentioning here. If you complete the LPN program and become licesned you can:

1. start working as an LPN and generate some income

2. apply for a bridge program to get an ADN or BSN

You said the ABSN is completely out of our pocket well then since the LPN program is paid for and doing that should shorten the length of the next level you go to i.e. bridge program, then it makes more sense to do the LPN first. Then there's less tuition for you to pay out.

i like the idea of getting more hands on experience with the LPN before going for the ABSN. I think I would do better in the accelerated program having that LPN experience behind me and fresh in my mind. Although when i spoke to the woman about the ABSN she said that the other students do just as well as the LPN students..but I still think the LPNs have to have some edge over them.

I think LPN is a great route to take- especially if it's also financially a better option. Also, if you start work (even it it's just per diem) while you're getting your BSN, you'll have some nursing experience to put on your resume! Best of luck!!

Also, if you don't mind, could you PM me the name of that school too? I'm an LPN looking to get my BSN. Thank you :)
