Looking for a School....HELP

Published

Hello All!

Currently I am living in Michigan but feeling that I am ready to relocate!! I am thinking about moving near the Hampton area or the Richmond area (Not sure how close they are to each other) and am looking to start applying this year. If you all can offer me any kind of advice on this and school suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Looking forward to hearing from you all soon and thanks again!!:bowingpur

I'm in Norfolk, and Richmond is about 2 hours away.

I see that you've looked at ITT's school. I can give you a couple of options that aren't as pricey as there. In the area there's TCC, Thomas Nelson CC and a CC in Suffolk (that I can't remember the name of at the moment)- those 3 schools all offer 2-year nursing degrees (associate).

I have heard that TCC's new campus is beautiful, and caters to nursing students. Though I've also heard some negative stuff about the staff there. Don't know about the other 2 CC's.

ODU, NSU and Hampton U all offer BSN.

Riverside Hospital offers a diploma RN.

Bon Secours and Sentara both offer BSN's.

That being said- I'm at Sentara. I can't give you a whole lot of info on their BSN program, I'm currently in the last diploma class that's being offered. The price for the new BSN class is comparable to what you'd pay at ODU and NSU.

What I can say is that for the most part- I LOVE the facutly at Sentara. There's only 1 teacher that I've had an issue with- but that teacher was new to the campus in August.

Just ask if you have any other questions.

Cheryl

Thanks so much for your response!! How far is Norfolk from Hampton? I have family there and they say they LOVE Hampton. I have thought about doing a BSN however I feel like I want to focus more on being able to work and then work on the BSN later. Are there any wait list currently for the programs that you mentioned? I also hear the Bon Secours is starting a RN program this year. Any comments on that? I had yet to look in Sentara I think I will do that as well. How much longer do you have there? How long did it take you to get in? So Sentara will no longer be doing the diploma class? Thats disappointing because that is mainly what I have been looking into.

Have you heard anything about Bon Secours as well?

Bon Secors is BSN, just like Sentara. In fact, both hospitals are starting their BSN programs at the same time.

Riverside still has a diploma program, I think that one's nights too, I have a couple of friends looking into that one.

Since TCC now has a new campus, I don't think they have a waiting list. Not sure about the other CC.

Hampton is on the other side of the water, maybe a 30 minute drive (as long as the HRBT isn't backed up)

I'm in my second rotation, OB/Peds. Just finished OB rotation in clinical, I have Peds when we get back from break (in 2 weeks) Graduation is June 2011. Not soon enough LOL

As I said, I don't know a whole lot about the BSN program, but all of the faculty currently there are going to be teaching the BSN program. The one thing I know for sure, is if you want to apply for the BSN program, you have to be a CNA. Now Sentara does have a CNA program, but there's other places out there who teach that program for less.

Oh wow really? Well that will push me back a little more! I am currently a Medical Assistant and have been working as one for 2 years so I thought that the experience would help me out a little as well. Thats kinda unfrotunate so now I have to put that into the mix. I want to place my name on as many lists and desks in VA as possible. Do you like living there? How is the weather? I know that you all have had a kinda rough winter this year. I am just really excited at the possibility of moving. Any certain areas I need to look into for housing? I want a good neighborhood with good schools seeing as though my daughter will be starting school soon.
