Question

Looking for RN program that includes prereqs

I've been LVN for over 10 years.  I almost finished prereqs for RN program at local College,  but then I was diagnosed with cancer.  I'm now in remission,  but some of the prereqs may have expired.  Are there any programs where the prereqs are built in?

I'm glad you're in remission and ready to pursue your RN. That is very inspiring.

As for your question, many schools have programs incorporating prerequisites into the nursing curriculum.

  • Some accelerated BSN (ABSN) programs or direct-entry MSN programs allow students to complete necessary coursework while working toward their nursing degree. This might give you the flexibility you're looking for.
  • It may also be helpful to look into schools focusing on transitioning from LVN to RN. Some programs cater specifically to people with healthcare experience like yourself. These often include prerequisite courses as part of the curriculum.
  • Some schools are more flexible about course expiration, especially if you've had significant healthcare experience. You will need to contact schools directly to see if they would accept your prior coursework or offer ways to make up expired courses without starting over completely.

  • Online Programs. Some online RN programs include built-in prerequisites. These may be a good option if you're looking for flexibility and must balance your studies with recovery or work.

Have you checked with the local colleges to see how they handle expired prerequisites? Some programs might allow you to retake individual courses or give credit for specific areas based on your work experience.

Because you have unique circumstances, your best bet is to contact programs directly and inquire. It never hurts to ask. If you find that you must repeat a prerequisite course, remain focused on the big picture and keep moving forward.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
