Legality of med count

Question for the legal eagle minds in here:

Long term care -assisted living unit

Some narcs are from mailaway bottles, thus they are time consuming to count. One resident has a large # of a med never used, but brought in by family upon admission. I was instructed to not count as they had been counted and countersigned by a second person and sealed with signatures by a manager/supervisor.

Not sure the reasoning, too much of a pain for those who need to do it everyday?

Or is it too time consuming (costing facility $$)?

My thoughts are both!

Is this at all legal??? If there is discrepancy down the road, all of us (whostand to be affected by this. Who is to say someone won't open something up?

Will the response be from the nursing board "You should never have accepted the keys in that situation?" I think they would be right.

I can choose where to work and would choose not to do that again.

Thoughts?
