laboratory results

I'm seriously having trouble with interpreting lab test results.

Please help me out here!

The patient is an 82 old lady.

provisional medical diagnosis: vomiting, dehydration, suspected urinary tract infection.

----------------------------------------------

The Laboratory Results;

Na 145 mEq/L

K 4.0 mEq/L

Creatinine 116

Urea 9.2

----------------------------------------------

These are the results.

The sodium and potassium levels are in normal range, right?

but what does these creatinine and urea level indicate?

But then, next day

the test results has been changed.

----------------------------------------------

the lab test result;

Na 147mEq/L

K 2.9 mEq/L

Creatinine 145

Urea 12.0

----------------------------------------------

Little bit of change there in sodium level (increased)

and dramadically increased potassium.

and creatinine&Urea also.

what does this change indicate?

why this is hapening?

Thank you for your attention:mad:

what is the unit label on the creatinine and urea? if it is umol then they are only slightly elevated.

creatinine, serum - normal is 44-97 umol (female) - elevated in uti

urea (bun), serum - normal is 10-20 mg/l or 3.6 - 7.1 umol/l

you can look up lab results and significance of them on these websites if you do not have a lab reference book of your own

She's got a UTI

With a K of less than 3.5, and hers is 2.9!, I hope they are giving her potassium. She is libel to start having some serious cardiac issues..... UTI, and I totally agree with DAYTONITE about that, would be the LEAST of her issues......

increase in serum creatinine level indicates uti??

but my text book says that is an indication of possible malfunction or failure of the kidneys.

that is true. what can you do about it? elevated creatinine levels mean there is renal insufficiency going on. it's not renal failure but it is like being on the road to potential renal problems. you don't want to do anything to push the kidneys over the edge, so you don't give medications that are nephrotoxic.
