L&D Nurses in MA

hi, i don't know anything about the boston area. i go to school in springfield, ma and live in ct. however, i am interested in going into l&d so i've been doing my research. i found out that the biggest hospitals around my area won't take anyone w/o experience or at least they need to have med surg exp. but there are a two hospitals in my area that do l&d internships. it's a 6 month program. i figure that once i graduate i want to work for a hospital that has a formal training program, not just be trained by someone else. i am lucky that i live in a place where there are about 10 hospitals within a 30 minute drive so i have a lot to choose from. about 4 of those hospitals have formal training programs for new graduates in icu, med surg, l&d, nicu, etc.

i would suggest you go onto this link: http://www.mhalink.org/public/mahospitals/ and look at the websites from the hospitals in your area and see if they offer some type of l&d internship.

It is always a good idea to do med surg first or some sort of basic nursing because you do use those skills. Especially since most people want and need experienced specialty nurses, however that said, as was mentioned, there are probably programs out there that will sponsor a training thing for you in return for a committment to them. I don't personally know of any, but give it a try. Or, try to get into a community hospital first and then you will be in the trenches which will be good if you eventually want to go somewhere else.
