Question

Keep Getting Turned Down for CM Jobs

Dear Nurse Beth,

I am 54. I have been a nurse since 2005. Worked in just about every department as a nurse. I now have DJD/arthritis in my spine. I am not disabled but do not need to work at the bedside anymore. So I am no longer working. I want to obtain a position in CM, UM, ect. I am not having any luck applying. Keep getting denial. They will not tell you the reason for denial except that they went with someone else. How can I improve if I do not know why? Do I tell them about my condition and why I am not currently working on the floor? I am lost and not sure where to go from here.

Dear Turned Down for CM Jobs,

The reasons you may be getting turned down are lack of experience and that you are currently unemployed. It is easier to get a job when you are employed rather than unemployed. You are competing against applicants with experience.

You want to end your unemployment streak as soon as possible. Do you have any work restrictions? If your health allows it, you may want to consider applying for a bedside job you have a good chance of getting, and then pursuing a career in CM/Um. Once you have insider status, you can apply for CM/UM jobs in your own organization.

For example, maybe you could land a job in PACU. Protect your back, exercise, maintain a good weight, get help with any lifts, stretch daily, etc.

As far as telling them about your condition, there's no benefit in telling a prospective employer about your health issues unless you are looking for a work-related accommodation.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
