Jumping through Hoops

Published

Hello everyone, I am a second year RN student in Central Kentucky. My partner and I just went to Kauai for two wonderful weeks. It was my first time on the island, his 6th. (Well actually 5th, he went once to the Big Island, but now I'm splitting hairs.) Anyway, we're thinking that we are going to set up a 4 year plan towards moving there, because it was amazing, and there's really not a lot tying us down here. We thought with my going into nursing, finding a job shouldn't be that difficult. He is in IT, so those jobs are usually in demand too, but I could support us until he got one, etc.

We're just wondering what moving to the islands will be like, and what sorts of hoops I will have to jump through to get a job there. (Sure hoping that whole strike thing gets sorted out soon....crossing my fingers for you guys..we waved at you a couple weeks ago in Lihue.)

Think real hard before you consider it moving here. RE costs are ridiculous, the public school system stinks, and the treatment of nurses by HPH is appalling.

IT jobs are NOT in demand on Kauai. And on the other islands, you gotta know someone to get a job in IT, and the likelihood is that you do NOT know someone here.

Hmm...I hear you that things are kind of rough. We're just seriously thinking this thing over, and not going to make any rash decisions. I am thinking that after I get through school in a year, about taking a travel nurse assignment (once I get the needed experience) and then seeing if I can nudge my way out there.

We hear you loud and clear that you guys are having a rough time..and hope it gets better. We're just seriously in love with all that beautiful landscape, hiking, etc.. Who knows...only time will tell.
