Hello all,

I am a new grad and started my career in the NICU. After only 2 months it was clear to me that the NICU was not where I was supposed to be. I could not handle the baby deaths. I guess one doesn't know what they can handle until they try. Anyway, the hospital I work for is a far commute, but their sister hospital in the same health system is pretty close - so I asked for a transfer there. My hospital has been amazing. They are letting me transfer and the new hospital is buying my contract (signing bonus) and everyone has been amazing. I am really lucky there.

I was offered to shadow on three different units...in patient rehab, ortho/trauma/stroke and behavioral health. I have extensive background in mental health education, suicide prevention education and advocacy so I thought the behavioral health unit would be a great fit. I was right!! I had my interview today and it went amazing. I fit right in and the unit felt like a great fit. The manager had even attended some of my educational programs that I did before nursing school! It was the easiest job interview I've ever had. They loved me, I loved them and I accepted the job!

My nursing friends think I've lost it wanting to work in behavioral health. But hey, I'm used to dealing with stigmatizing situations and people who are marginalized. It feels like a natural fit that I'd add my nursing career to that list. ?

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself as the newest member of the psych nursing club. Hoping I can read here and get advice and feedback as I progress. I also pray that this is the answer I've been looking for - it feels like it is.

Specializes in mental health / psychiatic nursing.

Welcome! I love working in mental health and as challenging as it can be at times, still find it to be my home. Hope you enjoy your time in the psych nursing club! ?
