job change process

hello all!!!

I have been working on a med-surg floor now for a little over a year, and I love my job. I love interacting with my patients, their families, and my fellow nurses. Everyone is so nice on my floor, especially my boss. I know I was lucky to be able to start my nursing career on a floor where everyone is so helpful; I have learned so much!

My only problem with my job is that i hate working weekends and holidays. I know someone has to do it, and I feel a little selfish and silly actually saying it out loud, but I do. :no:

I was looking into some of the jobs offered for RNs in the clinics owned by our hospital (M-F 8-5, no weekends, etc). I have been told by a few fellow employees that these positions take a pay cut, obviously.

My questions are probably silly to most of you, but this is my first "real job" and I am not really sure how the process works. Since the clinics are within the same hospital system I currently work, I would only be filling out a transfer form for the job I desire.

These are my questions:

Once I apply, do I tell my boss that I have applied for another job, or wait until I hear back..get things finalized, etc?

If I were to get offered this position, they must tell me the new pay rate before I accept, correct?

Lastly, would it look terrible if I decided to not accept the position based on pay?

thanks in advance for your help! :heartbeat

At least in my experience, I think in your interview before you get offered/accept an offer, you can discuss salary rates and you can decide from there if you want to accept the position.

When you tell your boss is up to you. I work in computers right now and I know I'd rather have a job in hand before I let go of my current one so I wouldn't tell my boss. Yet when I transferred within the same company I let my current manager know because I didn't want it to get back to them and have it be a surprise. So I'm not really sure. All my experience is non-nursing/medical though. And I don't consider my job a "real job" still :) All though it's more of a real job than Burger King (which I did when I was 16).

I recently transferred within my institution and I did not tell my boss until I secured the position. However, we weren't the best of friends. In your case you may benefit by talking to your boss and explaining the reasons why you are seeking another job. She may be able to work with you or at least put in a good word. And I have turned down a few jobs due to salary. Don't feel bad.

Who knew....... nurses have to work weekends and holidays. What a shock!

:bugeyes::uhoh3:

I left med/surg for the same reason no weekend/holidays. The pay cut was so small it didnot matter. It has been worth it so go for it.
