Hello There!I've been reading in some other forums about nursing shortages not necessarily being the case. I'm currently finishing my pre-reqs and applying to nursing schools. I'm curious as to what you guys think (or know) about the hiring situation here in Michigan.I'm located in Ann Arbor and hope to work at either St. Joes or one of the U of M complexes. Any thoughts on the hiring situation?

Don't worry there are plenty of jobs out there. I was just on the U of M website a couple days ago...Wow, they could hire an entire graduating class by themselves.

Yeah, U of M is hiring up the wazoo, and if you can't find a job in A2, Lansing and GR both have PLENTY of jobs too. :) Michigan is definitely a shortage state.
I'm in my second semester..and I look at the job postings here in Lansing every day. There's always RN jobs sitting around waiting at both the major hospitals here. And then there's all the 'burbs.
Good luck!

Hi!
I recently hired in at St. Joe's as a PCA to gain experience and to help pay for my pre-req's for school. I can't tell you how impressed I am with the St. Joe's system after going through orientation. I know a couple of nurses who work at various St. Joe's campuses and they have nothing but wonderful things to say about the system. I applied through the website:

I also know that U of M is constantly hiring as well. My daughter is a patient at the Congenital Heart Clinic there and she has had wonderful care from the nurses and Physicians there. Good luck with your job search.

I am so glad to hear that you like St. Joe's so much.
I know I made the right choice when I applied at St. Mary Marcy Hospital in Livonia, also part of the Trinity Health System.
I had my interview this morning, and I got hired!!!
This is going to be my first nursing job here in the US. (I'm from Hungary.)
I'm going to start on the medical unit, night shifts.
Which nursing school are you applying to?
Also good luck with your new job as a PCA at St. Joe's!!!

One point to my hubby!!!
He just read what I wrote here and found right away, that I said St. Mary Marcy :roll instead of St. Mary Mercy. I herein apologize to all my future colleagues for that...
Yay! Someone else with Trinity! Most likely I will be going to Schoolcraft for at least my pre-req's. I'm not sure where I will actually apply for clinicals. The waitlists everywhere are crazy. I am considering doing my pre-req's at Schoolcraft and then transfering to a BSN program. A friend of mine graduated from Eastern's BSN program last year and didn't have a wait. It all depends on finances. I don't qualify for any grants for financial aid due to my husband's income and we don't want to take out student loans if we can avoid it. So I guess we will see where we are at in a couple of years and proceed from there.
What kind of process did you have to go through, coming from another country, to work in the States? Did you just have to take the MI Boards? Good luck with your new job!

first of all, congrats to you on choosing schoolcraft!!!
i went there for my missing classes (needed clinicals) and it is a really great school. they have excellent teachers and great clinical sites. :wink2:
a lot of the hospitals offer help with the bsn program, when you are already working, plus it counts towards your ce credits.
i would check into that before deciding what to do.
i had to go through cgfns, before i could apply for a mi license and take the nclex, it took a long time, and i also had to take those 3 classes at schoolcraft to get the certificate from them. you can read more about this subject under the international nurses forum.
i'm just glad it's over, and i can start working next month.
:rotfl:
i don't think i'm going to go for the bsn, there isn't such a big difference in the pay, and it would be extremely hard for me to get all my grades transferred from hungary.
good luck to you,
cs.
