IV compatibility

Published

Does anyone have any resourses on this topic?

At work we use an online Micromedex product to look up IV compatibility.

Sometimes I need to hang meds with D5 or D10 and micromedex does not provide this info. Yesterday I had to hang magnesium sulfate with D10 and even our unit pharmacist couldn't tell me if they were compatible.

Anyone have any answers?

That's compatible. For example TPN. The dextrose concentration on tpn's are higher, and magnesium is sometimes or usually included in the TPN bag. So if you Rider the MG it would be alright. Maybe your in house pharmacist was real busy.

That's a good point!

My in-house pharmacist told me that D-10 was probably unstable with many drugs. But I still don't know where to find this info.

I guess it's safe to assume D10 can be hung with most electrolytes, but with not much else?

Some antibiotics are mixed with dextrose, some are incompatible. With Dilantin the reasoning behind is the pH which would lead to a precipitate. Drug reps usually give some incompatibility charts that you can post in the medroom for a quick look up. But it's hard to come by when the Pharmacy gets it first. Sometimes you'd have to ask your drug reps. They can give you so many different things besides pens, penlights, mugs, scissors, and the very very very good lunch they provide lol. You just have to ask what they have in their ''goodie suitcase" I still wonder how much xigris' company spent over the years just feeding the nurses.
