Is Cryotherapy a science based practice?

http://www.mobilitywod.com/2012/08/people-weve-got-to-stop-icing-we-were-wrong-sooo-wrong.html

The article is not scientific and is aimed at athletics, but it does cite scientific sources (Journal of Emergency Medicine) and addresses soft tissue injuries. Since the 2010 ACLS/BLS guidelines got changed dramatically, I'm always a little apprehensive about practices and being too invested in their validity without studies to back it up.

In your nursing experience on the floor, is icing beneficial? Any thoughts?
