There was a question on my exam today and i was hoping someone could help me figure out if I chose the correct response...
It said that a person with massive thermal burns is heading toward irreversible shock. what will their lab findings show?
I chose increased liver enzymes. The other options were decreased cardiac enzymes, elevated pH levels, or decreased HCO3 levels. I cannot find this anywhere in my texts...I just chose elevate liver enzymes as a guess. Can anyone tell me the answer and why? Thanks.

Life threatening shock will result in decreased oxygen delivery at the cellular level resulting in anaerobic cellular respiration (Krebs cycle). This results in increased lactic acid production and a drop in the blood HCO3 as the buffers are exhausted by compensating for the lactic acidosis. I don't see any other lab value in your list that applies.

Well put. We just studied this in my adult health class. I understand why it is the correct answer but never could have explained it so well. Thank you.
