Ireland

I recently got my RN license in the United States (I am a U.S. citizen). I was wondering how difficult it would be to obtain employment in Ireland for about 6 months while my husband is there on business. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thread moved to the International Forum since it is specific to licensure and or immigration.

First, be aware that you are required to have the four year degree to be able to get licensed there, the training must be at least as long as what is required there. You will need to go thru the licensure process before you can deal with immigration issues. What type of visa will you be on? Will it permit you to work, or will you need to get a visa that will permit that?

When are you planning to go over there?

I have my RN license now, but I won't complete my BSN program until August. I would be going to Ireland from September to February.

I am not sure what type of visa to apply for. I've just been told to apply for a work permit.

The whole process seems pretty complicated. Even if I get the visa and Ireland accepts my license, I'm not sure if anyone will want to give a foreign-trained, recent graduate (I only have one year RN experience), temporary nurse a job.

There is no way that you will be able to work there during that time as an RN. They will not look at your application for licensure until you have finished your program and have a completed set of transcripts. And then they have to wait for the licensing board in the US to send in verification to them of your license here and that there are no issues with it, and then your school needs to send in the completed transcripts as well.

It it going to be six months plus by the time that you even have a chance at getting thru the licensure process there, then comes immigration and they cannot do a thing until you have your license in hand.

And if you are not getting a visa thru your husband that will permit you to work, it is going to be impossible for you to get one in most cases as well.

Best suggestion for you is to try and do some volunteeer work while you are there and just enjoy your time there.
