Question

International Teaching

Hello, I am a retired reinstated LVN from Texas and I have spent the last 2 years Teaching in Special School Public Districts real teaching and I have a bachelor's degree along with my associate nursing and wanted to ask if it would work at a University since with both of my degrees they are masters degree level comparable?

The short answer is usually no. Most universities require at least a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) for clinical instructor roles or a PhD for tenure-track positions. Having two separate degrees doesn't usually count as a master's equivalent in the eyes of academic accreditation bodies.

Nursing education is strict about credentials. Even with your teaching experience in public districts, a university will look for that specific MSN to meet Board of Nursing requirements. You can check the specific faculty requirements through the Boards of Nursing to see how your state handles instructor qualifications.

Academic Hurdles

  • Regional accreditation standards usually mandate that faculty hold a degree higher than the one they are teaching.
  • Clinical oversight roles often require an RN license rather than an LVN/LPN license in a university setting.
  • Experience in special education is valuable but it doesn't bypass the clinical degree hierarchy.

You might have better luck looking at community colleges or vocational schools. They often hire LVNs to teach in practical nursing programs. These roles frequently value real-world teaching experience and bachelor's degrees more than high-level research universities do.
