Hi.

I am a pre-nursing student and i already know that i want do obtain my master's degree in nursing. I am interested in becoming a nurse midwife, so I am wondering if anyone could tell me what it is like to be a midwife? Also how many patients do they usually see? If any, what kind of flexibility does this type of nursing offer? I would greatly appreciate any information that anyone has. Thanks.

There are many variations. Midwives work in a variety of settings. Ours are affiliated with one practice and do office work as well as labor/delivery. They work like dogs. Once, I thought I might consider becoming a CNM, but the more I work with them and see how much they do, the happier I am that I never pursued the degree. I love being an L&D nurse and do NOT want the added responsibility or liability.

By the way go to the Americal College of Nurse Midwives and look it over. You will get some wonderful information there. I think it is http://www.acnm.org. Good luck with your studies.

Specializes in Step-down ICU.

Thanks very much for the info! I will check out the site.
