I am a nursing student expecting to graduate this May. I live in NYC but I am extremely interested in moving upstate to the Albany area. Ive been searching alot about new graduate jobs & nursing residency programs but I am not having much luck. I was just wondering if any one knew if there were job opportunites for new graduates in this area. Also, what hospitals offer residency programs for new graduates & in what fields?
I want to begin getting in touch with nurse recruiters soon so I can start to get my foot in the door but I am not sure which hospitals I would have any luck with?
Lastly, if any one has an estimate on what new graduate salary is there?
Thanks You! :)

I live close to albany and there are about 7-8 hospitals in the area and no one had a new grad program this year, my sister graduated in may from a local community college and was not able to find a job in a hospital and was forced to get a job working in an urology office and stuff. I do have friends who work up at AMC and the pay is considerably less than what you will make in the city. I work in NYC at a prestigious hospital and I took an almost 15 K jump in salary to commute an hour to the city. If ur going to look any where I know people who have jobs at St. Peters ( I think is the name of hospital ) and I would also look at Albany Medical Center, those are the only 2 places I know of up in albany, someone who is from there may know more. Personally, If i was you I would look in the city and find a job there ify ou can, the money is better and the experience is wayyy better than what you will get up here, IMHO. But do what you want, best of luck finding a job anywhere tho has the market up here and down there are FLOODED with new grads.

I currently work as a travel nurse near Albany. There ARE a lot of hospitals in this general vicinity. The two main hospitals/systems in Albany are Albany Medical Center and St. Peter's. Ellis Hospital, Glens Falls Hospital, Northeast Health (which is several facilities and recently established a partnership with St. Peter's), and Saratoga Hospital are all within a 25 mile radius. My hunch is that you will earn approximately $21-22 per hour to start. However, most of these facilities offer 10-30% differentials after 3p and/or during the weekends. DO NOT be discouraged! New York is a major market and the competition, particularly in this economy, is tough. The reality is that you NEED to get 1-2 years of experience. So, check out these facilities, apply, and see what happens. While the pay is higher in New York, so is the cost of living. Good luck!

I am currently working in AMC. AMC starts offering a new graduate residency program this year. I am just saying* I am also from NYC and moved to Albany a year ago. Good luck.
