Insurance and Independence

Hello all,

I am a SRNA hopeful and I just have a couple of questions - how much can CRNA's expect to have to pay for malpractice insurance? I understand that some anesthesia groups cover the cost and that when a CRNA fuctions independently they usually front the entire bill, but can anyone give some ballpark figures?

Also, I understand that similiar to NP's and PA's the level that CRNA's can function varies state to state. Which states are very independent and which ones are restrictive? Are there any websites that pertain to this information? Where does the trend seem to be going? Thanks for the replies.......

#1 CRNA's can function independently in all states, supervision seems to vary by job more than by state.

#2 even working Locum Tenens most groups will cover your malpractice cost. Go to www.gaswork.com and look at the some of the oportunities out there, it will open your eyes. Of all the jobs they post, probably 95% cover all malpractice regardless of whether you do contract or become an employee.

As for being like a PA or NP, not so much :chuckle

There is a huge difference between a labor force which is established with a labor shortage and great demand, and a specialty where you have to justify your position. While some MDA's are insecure about CRNA's, at least here in Texas NP's and PA's practically have to beg for work. Three of my current nursing instructors have NP degrees and they couldn't find a job anywhere but in BFE.

Malpractice insurance rates vary state by state, for reasons unclear to me. I happen to work in a state that has had tort reform for over 20 years, yet our rates are high. Currently on 2nd year claims made, I pay over $10,000 a year. That is with no claims in 45 years of practice. The insurance situation is very complicated and emotional. A good resource is AANA Insurance Inc., which can be found on the AANA website; . I think it is on the members portion of the website. There has also been a heated dialogue on . Again, that is for AANA members, but students are welcome and given a lot of support.
