Insect bite

Published

Hi all. Thought I would post here and perhaps get some advice as I'm a bit worried.

As a nursing student currently doing my pediatric practice in a local hospital in the PICU. Yesterday I was assisting a nurse in bathing a very sick baby, and I felt something bite the back of my neck, next to the hairline. It felt almost like a needle prick and immediately began to itch. Quite surprised, I told her, "I think something just bit me", she checked the back of my neck and confirmed that it was very red. I proceeded remove my gloves and clean the area with an alcohol wipe.

I reported this to my professor who made light of it and suggested that perhaps my hair got caught on my neckchain.

There remained a discomfort in my neck area and at 2 am this morning I awoke with a pounding headache (I don't usually get them) although now it's gone.

Can there be insects living in hospital rooms? Should I be worried?

Any word of advice would be so helpful to me now. Thank you

Elizabeth
