Infection control

Hello,

Anyone with good source of infection control materials for rn nclex? Also, I came across a question online, did not have rationales, but the question asked who can you cohort a hiv patient with? Need your inputs. Thanks.

    As for the question of who can you cohort an HIV pt with...consider how HIV is transmitted? It's bloodborne (and body fluid), correct? So unless the pts are having sex or sharing needles in their hospital room, an HIV+ pt is not going to transmit it to an HIV- one. You don't need to cohort them.

    Unless the question is referring to someone w/ full-blown AIDS, vs. merely HIV+, and you would need to consider protective isolation to prevent any infection in the pt. We would cohort a severely immunocompromised pt with nobody. What were the answer choices to this question?

    "Cohorting" refers to pairing pts who are on the same precautions together when private rooms are not available. For example, two C. diff pts are not going to infect one another w/ C. diff because the infection has already occurred.
