Improving electronic handover system

Hi I'm after some ideas to improve this handover practice. We currently receive a text message to say there is a electronic handover ready and it goes to the coordinators phone. But sometimes the coordinator has a horrible patient load and might not see the text. Emergency staff also call to confirm. So ED want to cut out the phone call to stream line their service. What other methods could be used to alert that there is a handover. We have a electronic white board in the medication room and I thought the IT people could design a alert flash or something similar because we are in that room constantly :)

I understand that the emergency room is busy and floor nurses everywhere are busy but it drives me nuts that no one wants to "waste" the time doing the best thing- which is a person to person verbal report. I had an admission roll up from the ED during shift change, never had a chance to even look at whatever they sent electronically. All I can really remember is that I settled the patient, looked in on my other six patients and then came back to finish the admission- only to call a rapid response and intubate the patient. He nearly died because no one could wait a few minutes. Had I known that he hadn't received his myasthenia gravis meds in nearly 24 hours, and his oxygen requirements were new and increasing over the few hours before admission (details I found out days later from another nurse), I would have changed the focus of my admission and start of shift.

I know that wasn't your question and I'm sorry, but I HATE electronic report and think it's a disservice to everyone.
