ICUs in Chicago

Masonic hires new grads into their ICUs. They also have an RN residency program which is an in depth orientation for new grads. You might want to look into that. I would also think about working on a med-surg floor for awhile just to learn and become familiar with the basics before going to the ICU. The ICU can be very overwhelming for new grads, but it can be done.

I will be graduating this May and have been trying to research into where I would like to work. I completed an ICU externship this past summer at a community hospital in the suburbs and loved it! :wink2: I would like to work in a teaching hospital and was wondering which of the Chicagoland hospitals will hire a new grad in their ICU?

Illinois Masonic will only hire grads through its new RN Residency program, go to http://www.advocatehealthcare.com and enter 9X04 in the search and it will direct you, (the RN residents can go to ICU)

I am looking into Loyola University Medical Center, Rush, University of Chicago, or Illinois Masonic.

I'm no expert, but this is what I "heard". (I don't know about ICU new grads). I know an RN that went through the direct entry masters program and works at Illinois Masonic. Gennaver has good advice about that.

I know two other new grads, one at Rush and one at University of Chicago. What I know is that Rush is a non-union hospital and this nurse didn't like the idea of unionized nurses. University of Chicago IS a union hospital and they basically allow you to work whatever number of overtime hours you want.

The guy at University of Chicago is a new grad that went straight into the PICU. If he did that, I imagine they would hire a new grad in the ICU, but I don't know. He works nights (by choice) for 20% more pay and always adds an extra shift.

If someone knows different, let me know, but this is what these nurses told me.
