Icky transcripts

Published

Hey everyone.

I will be applying to UPMC Shadyside for the spring of 2016. And I have a concern.

I was enrolled in a psychology class and Biology. I had to stop for medical reasons, but due to a miscommunication, I missed the medical withdrawal deadline by 3days. That means that my transcripts will have two F's. How much will this effect my potential for admission???

Ugh!!!

Thank you all for your input.

Amy

Hi Amy -

I had a similar situation when I was in a car accident and had several broken bones. My GPA did suffer substantially however, they were not courses required for nursing, such as biology and psychology (depending on what Psych class it was?).

You can go and retake the 2 classes. I know it is not ideal but I think that if Nursing is the way you are wanting to go, we do what we have to. :) I would check to see if Straighterline has them - it's an online self-paced "university" that offers classes to complete degrees or make pre-reqs w/o having to enroll in a university and pay their rates. Also, Rio Salado has a similar option, I think? But of course make sure your school of choice will accept credits from there. :) Let us know!

No one but the school can tell you if it will affect your admission. Having worked in admissions I would say your odds at the school I worked at were about 0.00001% of getting in. First thing: No one wants to hear excuses. Words like "miscommunication" can actually hurt you. As a professional nurse you need to be 100% correct. If you injure a patient you can forget using terms like "miscommunication". Attention to detail is SO important and no one..I mean NO ONE...is going to hold your hand through nursing. They expect you to be responsible and aware. Many RNs have medical problems/deaths in families, etc....no judge in court is going to dimiss a case against you because when it happened you were ill.

You are right to be concerned. And if you do get in...ATTENTION TO DETAIL.. it is the hallmark of a good nurse!!!

Good luck!!
