Hi,

I am a radiologic technologist, CHHA, and pre-nursing student however I am applying for a position for IR/Cath Lab that requests an IABP certification. My question is, how would I go about getting this certification and is possible to do a simulation situation, similar to CPR? This posting is not requesting an RN degree but an AAS, RT cert w IR preferred and experience.

I would appreciate any input. Thank you greatly in advance!

Hmm - I am not familiar with any IABP training program for non-nurses. Most of the IABP manufacturers offer a comprehensive training program that is specific to their equipment, but the pre-requisites usually include critical care nursing experience because there is a lot more to IABP patient care management than just dealing with the machine; many of the required interventions (e.g., titration of vaso-active meds) is limited to nurses or physicians. The only other type of clinician who works with IABP are perfusionists - but this is usually limited to the OR.

You may want to look on some of the vendor websites like Datascope & Maquet for more info.

Thank you, your response makes perfect sense, I appreciate your help. Why they would be asking a radiology tech to have this certification is a little puzzling to me.
