anyways.... i am currently a cna/ nursing student at a ltcf in bc canada. i am a casual (g*d forbid!) and i was asked to work a shift in our locked althzimers (sp?) unit. a 3-11 shift. i have only ever worked nights in the unit so i only ever see these residents with their eyes shut. well 99.9% of the regular staff that work in the unit think that they are the queen's of the tena product or somthing, (hardly any of the casual staff will take a shift in there b/c of the regular staff.) so anyways i asked my partner what the routine was and she said you can take the juniper wing so like a complete idiot i said okay duh juniper has all the end stage and completly dependant people on it. well there is this resident who is about 5'2" and about 200lbs on juniper her care plan clearly says 2person transfer only, for changes and any transfer period end of story. so i left her until my partner got back from break etc. might i mention i did 2 of her resident total care while she was gone so that i could get her to help me with my big lady. all she said was "no do her by yourself, i can." she is 5'9" and 185 approx. and is like a total butch. i on the other hand am 5'4" and 102 lbs and a complete wussy. so i asked for help and got totally rejected. so because i refuse to risk my residents safety or mine for that matter i washed this lady up and changed her incontinent product while she was in her wheel chair. oooh i am so mad :angryfire so i called my boss and told him under no circumstance would i work in the unit until this matter has been settled. and i am taking it to the saefty committee because if i had done as my "partner" had told me to do (she has seniority dur to the fact that she is regular staff and i am only a lowly casual) and i or the resident had been hurt i would have been fired of not following the care plan and iwould not be covered for my medical expenses relating to my personal injuries. might i add i wen to school with this girl and she nearly flunked but the rest of us took pity on her and tutored her. sorry just needed to vent ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! i feel a little better  :deadhorse

Venting accepted, sounds like you have things under control. And we wonder why nurses have a problem helping each other out. One leach in the lot and you may have many who 'eat their young' over 20 years in response to that one leach in CNA class. Good luck, I hope to travel again in 4 years and we might meet somewhere. Remain a patient advocate and follow the protocols that makes sense. Protocols or rules that don't make sense as far as being a patient advocate need to be questioned.

danianne, i'm sorry this happened to you. that's totally unexeptable behavior by your coworker. stop with the seniority...don't give her more power than she's worth. she's a coworker and nothing more than that. whether it's on the cardex, careplan...or not if the pt only weighed 100lbs the fact is you asked for assistance and was blown off and proves she's not a smart person. you never know when your going to need help, and this doesn't pertain just to the the day in question it may be next week your coworker may need a hand and there won't be anyone one there to assist her. do as i did going threw school blow it off and under your breath repeat after me, one day i will be your boss! :angryfire
