Check through the posts on this forum I have helped others before today answer questions about what nursing is like in Australia. Post any specific questions you have hear - there is another person asking the same question, so if you get together on one thread it will make it easy for me.:roll

Hi, my name is Leslie Ward. I live in North Carolina. This assignment is about health care issues and trends in another country. I am so thankful that you have taken the time to respond. If you would just answer the following questions it would help me tremendously.

What type of education is required for nurses?

What is the major role that nurses have in healthcare?

What type of services are available to the population? IE clinics, hospitals, nursing homes.

What is the major health care problem facing the population?

What do you feel is contributing to this?

Does the population value health?

What type of medicine is practiced, preventive or curative?

Who would you say are the most healthy? Young, middle age, or old?

I can't thank you enough for taking you time to help me.

Thanks so much, Leslie

Here is one thread I did earlier

https://allnurses.com/t45673.html

It has quite a lot of links in it.

What type of education is required for nurses?

see the "sticky" thread at the top it has links to a lot of Australian nursing websites. e.g. http://www.anc.org.au/02standards/ AS

you can see our standards are "competancy based"

What is the major role that nurses have in healthcare?

OOOOh A hard one! Gol! That one will take me about a year to answer because it depends on who and where you are. The role is different for the RN working at Boulia to the RN working in the Cardiothoracic ward at Chermside.

What type of services are available to the population? IE clinics, hospitals, nursing homes.

What is the major health care problem facing the population?

What do you feel is contributing to this?

I know my state goverment has just completed a big investigation into the state of health of QLD I will attempt to get my hands on a copy.

Does the population value health?

YES!!!! Elections are won and lost on health issues here. If you want to lose an election - talk about taking away our free health system

What type of medicine is practiced, preventive or curative?

I think there is more preventative medicine than in the States simply because if the goverment is footing the bill for the sick and injured then it makes sense to spend money on keeping the population healthy.

Who would you say are the most healthy? Young, middle age, or old?

Hmmmm? Dunno I will think about it.

Hello, Leslie!

I am an Israeli male nurse. There are answers to your questions!

Of course my answers are subjective.

1. Becoming a nurse in Israel means four year study at universety. After three years nurses apply to lisence exam and become RN. And one additional year grants them BN. There are no an educational instutes prepere PN.

2. According to the Israeli law, each citizen pays health tax ( about 5.5% of income). This money paid to Social Security Institute and this organization transfers money to four health fund according to the number of people insured in each fund.

3. Half of the hospitals here are governmental and another half belongs to the biggest health fund. There are one private hospital, and a few nets of private specialized clincs. Most private clinics partially belongs to the health funds too.

4. Mayor health problem is underfinancing. Another big problem is mismanagment.

5.Population in Israel does not value health, too much other problems.

6.Medical staff here is underestimated and underpaid, so you can imagine what tipe of medecine we have here. Now Israeli government curtails its budget and decreases financing of health system. Hospitals lay off employees, mostly nurses. Before it we had been short staffed and now it is undescribable.

7. The healthiest population here is young people.

Thank you so much for the great information on Israeli nursing! It is great to get such varying information on other countries. How long have you been a nurse? How are male nurses accepted there? Are there more female or male nurses? What is the biggest health care concern for the citizens (cancer, heart condition)? How are the elderly cared for, by family or institution? Is the water safe to drink? I am so sorry to bombard you with more questions but this is so interesting to me.

As you have probably gathered our health care is free but a little complicated. If you go to your local doctor the bill is paid - at least in part - by Medicare which is the commonwealth government. The PBS is underwritten by the commonwealth government but the hospitals are funded and run by the State government - they are also free. This leads of course to wrangling among the politicians about who pays for what and the patient can get caught between i.e. If a patient is discharged from hospital they are only given 5 days supply of medications and they are told to go to their local doctor for a script for the rest which they may have to pay for (but usually not in total).

Some of the other subtle downsides is that we have a strictly limited pharmacy list. If a doc wants to order a patient something that is not on that list he has to take it up, sometimes with the CEO of the hospital to get approval.

The government also underwrites/owns one of our TV and Radio broadcasters - the ABC. It seems to run far more public service type programs than I think you see in the US. Here is a link showing what I am talking about.

The links I gave before were to state government websites here is the commonwealth government website.

And if you want ot keep searching things Australian I find this search engine invaluable as it concentrates on Australian and New Zealand sites
