• Union power. How active and influential is the union in advocating for workers' rights and securing good contracts in your region?  
• Benefits and services. What kind of professional development, legal support, and member benefits does the union offer? Research the union's reputation in terms of member support, advocacy for healthcare professionals, and negotiation for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
• Affiliations. See who the union is affiliated with and if that aligns with your values. For example, the National Nurses United, Service Employees International Union, and California Nurses Union are all affiliated with AFL-CIO.
• National vs. local unions differ in scope. National unions provide broader advocacy and resources, whereas local unions exert immediate community influence. Their activity varies by region and healthcare settings.

Here are a few prominent unions to consider:

• National Nurses United (NNU) is the largest union of registered nurses in the U.S. It advocates for nurses' rights, better working conditions, and patient care.
• Service Employees International Union (SEIU). SEIU represents a broad range of healthcare workers, including nurses. It's members work for improved wages, benefits, and workplace safety. However, SEIU is not exclusive to nurses and is not always considered the most professional representative of nurses.
• United Nurses Associations of California (UNAC): If you're in California, UNAC may be a good option for community nurses. They focus on advocating for fair labor standards and work conditions in healthcare.
• State-specific unions. Many states have specific unions for nurses, some more active and effective than others. For example, the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) focuses on New York nurses, and the California Nurses Association (CNA) is another good option for California nurses.
