When choosing a union as a community staff nurse, its important  to consider the following factors:

Key Considerations When Choosing a Union

  • Workplace environment. Does the union represent workers in your specific community healthcare setting (e.g., public health, community clinics, home health, or long-term care)?
  • Union power. How active and influential is the union in advocating for workers' rights and securing good contracts in your region?
  • Benefits and services. What kind of professional development, legal support, and member benefits does the union offer? Research the union's reputation in terms of member support, advocacy for healthcare professionals, and negotiation for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
  • Affiliations. See who the union is affiliated with and if that aligns with your values. For example, the National Nurses United, Service Employees International Union, and California Nurses Union are all affiliated with AFL-CIO.
  • National vs. local unions differ in scope. National unions provide broader advocacy and resources, whereas local unions exert immediate community influence. Their activity varies by region and healthcare settings.

Here are a few prominent unions to consider:

If you're a community-based healthcare worker, looking at unions that focus specifically on your professional role and region might be a good idea. Generally, SEIU and NNU are two of the largest and most recognized unions for healthcare workers, and either may be an option depending on your specific needs and goals.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
