How to apply for first-aids certification

Published

Hi all,

I'm a international trained nurse... I'm planning to get a certification in first-aids. Does anyone know where to apply for the assessment ( in Edmonton )? May I know for those RN in Canada, How do they get recertificated? In hospital or else where? How long will it expire?

Thanks in advance!

You can be certified in first aid by St John's Ambulance, a volunteer organization that provides first aid services for special events. The certification is good for one year, generally. There is a charge. Emergency first aid with CPR "A" is $80 and one day long. Emergency First Aid with CPR "B" is $130 and two days.

St John's Ambulance it the most convenient and has the best price. Grant McEwan costs more and the classes aren't run as often. Before you can be employed as an RN in Canada you have to have Basic Rescuer CPR (Level "B"); we recertify through our workplace every year.

I get my basic life support (CPR) training annually from my employer in the UK.

Is this adequate for Canadian employers who ask for cetification in basic life support or do I need something different?

If your CPR includes adult and child basic CPR and choking as taught by either St John's Ambulance or the American Heart and Stroke Foundation using the 2005 guidelines then you're good to go.
