The axes diagnoses refer to psychiatric problems. Axes I are your primary diagnoses like major depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, schizoaffective, etc. Axes II are the personality disorders and mental retardation so like antisocial personality disorder or borderline personality disorder. Axes III is general medical conditions that may contribute to the psychiatric disoreders such as hypothyroidism or whatever. A lot of times you'll see just general medical conditions that may not contribute as well. AxesIV are psychosocial issues so divorced parents, abuse, etc. Axes V is the global assessment of functioning--it tells how functional the person is. The lower the number the less functional. sounds like psych...DSM (3 or 4) which is the bible for psychiatric diagnosis and description of illnesses. Stands for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
