Check with your sterile processing department, or ask a surgical technician.

Try http://www.surgical-instrument-pictures.com/
It has a bunch of quizes on a lot of the surgical instruments with really good close up pictures.
You can also check out amazon, there are a few books which are nice resources, but the site above is probably the best one on the web.

the website that was suggested is a good one. they have a lot of information about the instruments used in several different services. but it's a little difficult to carry with you! there are a couple of books listed on amazon.com, and this is one of the best.
http://www.amazon.com/differentiating-surgical-instruments-colleen-rutherford/dp/0803612249/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=utf8&s=books&qid=1222435542&sr=1-1
the description says, and i quote,
"product description
surgical technology students must memorize the names, characteristics, and purposes of hundreds of instruments used in general and specialty surgeries. the ability to differentiate instruments quickly and accurately can be a deciding factor in the success-or failure-of a procedure, yet there has been no book that presents, in one volume, the instruments students must memorize until now. differentiating surgical instruments offers a close-up look at the tips of over 700 cutting, clamping, grasping, retracting, and other surgical instruments to help students clearly and effectively distinguish among them."
they also have 2 used copies of this book -
surgical instruments: a pocket guide (paperback)
http://www.amazon.com/surgical-instruments-maryann-papanier-wells/dp/0721643116/ref=sr_1_3?ie=utf8&s=books&qid=1222435815&sr=1-3
this is a pocket sized edition of an instrument identification book and even though it's only available used, the names of the instruments don't change much. might be something to look at too.
oh - and don't be surprised if you find out that some instruments have more than one name! mostly it's between institutions, but within one institution, it can be called different names by different docs! so, don't be too taken aback or stymied if you hear something called by a number of names. mostly it's the more basic instruments though, and you get familiar with those pretty quickly.
hope these help - good luck!

i used to be the program director of a surgical tech program. try asking your new boss if you can spend a few days in the sterile processing department (spd). hands on the instruments is a great way to learn. :)
if you really want a resource, go with the
differentiating surgical instruments (spiral-bound)
