I am a new graduate nurse. I graduated in September. I would very much appreciate some advice on the position I have just been offered. It will be my first nursing post. It is for a 26 year old lady who has a trach, vent, suprapubic catheter and peg tube and is in a wheelchair.
I love the community and am hoping to do my midwifery training after getting a full year experience (I am in Ireland). There are so many jobs in my area in the hospitals also but I really did not enjoy my hospital placements in Uni. However, I loved the community.
Here are my dilemmas - 1) The director of midwifery whom I emailed about the midwifery course (I have always wanted to go into midwifery) has advised that while community is still experience, that acute in the hospital may be seen as more valuable at interview but this role in the community will be very clinically orientated and I will have a care assistant working with me who I have been told will assist me. 2) I am SCARED!!!!! with all the things that I will have to learn relating to the lady but I have been assured that I will shadow for at least three months and more if I need it. The agency are also sending me on cpr trach training and a full day vent training etc.
3) This position starts straight away with full nursing pay for the three months that I am shadowing so it has excellent conditions. I cannot work in a hospital here until Feb or Mar as I am awaiting my PIN. This is the same as your full nursing licence in the USA. I have clearance so I should have it by the end of Jan/feb but I can start my community job straight away.
Should I hold out and start in a hospital? or start my community PDN and stay at that for a year until I can get onto a midwifery course. I also have a Social Care degree and the manager has assured me that there is a very progressive career for me with them as they need care supervisors and team leaders also so if I do want to move on from that case, I can do so.
Thank you so much in advance for any replies. I appreciate it. Claire x

Start the PDN. You can always change to hospital down the road if you need that experience
Thank you, RNinIN. I will give it a chance but so scared. It's my first nurse role so I suppose that is to be expected lol. x
It is, but best of luck to you!
