Hey Guys! I have a friend who was just accepted into Nursing School in Virginia and was shocked to find out that she needs to be certified as a GNA to be able to work as a CNA there. That's ridiculous because she has been working as a CNA here in MD for over a year!!! She has a job secured in VA and everything! Does anyone know how she can certify as a GNA without repeating the entire CNA course???? It looks like Red Cross, where she got certified as a CNA, requires your test for the GNA within 1 year of course completion :-(:-(:-(

Am I misinterpreting your acronym: Geriatric Nursing Assistant? If she is already a CNA, and working at a VA, and if she is transferring to the VA VA (haha!), and if the GNA is a VA state requirement, the VAMC there should have a mechanism whereby she will either be accepted to practice in the state(Fed reciprocity), or she will be able to sit for the state exam to demonstrate proficiency.
Gotta check with the VA BON and the VA licensure office.
